About Us: The Hill Home and Its Cottages in Nainital

The Hill Home is a cluster of 3 independent cottages that are located in the verdant green hills of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.

Far from the touristy circuit of Mukteshwar & Nainital, ‘Hill Home’ is situated amidst the fruit orchards of Satoli Village. Strategically positioned at a height of about 6200 feet, surrounded by forests of Pine, Oak and Deodaar trees with a smattering of scarlet rhododendron, the cottages overlook an expansive valley & on a clear day, the view of the mighty snow clad mountain peaks of Nandakot, Nandadevi, Maiktoli, Trishul and Nandaghunti are simply breathtaking as can be seen in the picture above.

Philosophy Behind The Hill Home Cottages

The philosophy of our hosting is as uncomplicated as the name we have chosen for our homestay – It is your HOME in the hills and is a perfect getaway for families, friends and the lone traveller. Two full time caretakers – the young energetic & simple pahadi lads – Baalu and Bhaskar do all the helping, cleaning and the local grocery shopping.

The Hill Home is also an ideal space for striking that perfect work-life balance. There is a fast and reliable internet if deadlines have to be met. And when that is done, there is plenty else to do – short treks or day hikes or picnic lunches in spots that we have discovered in our years of living here. Time permitting – Baalu & Bhaskar also double up as guides !

You may feel up to spending the whole day outdoors. Or you may opt to sit curled up with a book – read or write or just hear yourself think- its refreshingly quiet, the silence occasionally broken by the chime of a faraway temple bell, bark of the fluffy local bhutia dog on his rounds, and the conversational chirping of birds.

Few Activities and Cafe Visits in the Local Areas

Bird watching, star gazing and a visit to the local weaving centre are some of the other activities one can indulge in. Visiting the local NGOs to explore opportunities/possibilities could be an option for people keen on doing their bit for society.

You may also indulge in your passion for cooking – Each cottage has a well equipped kitchen and the ever eager Baalu or Bhaskar to provide a helping hand. B&B can also cook simple home food in case you want to take it easy. Breads can be ordered from the baker a few hundred meters away from Hill home – you can even step into his small bakery and watch your bread being made. You can also walk up to the local grocers, Shubham’s or little further ahead Kapil’s, who are well stocked on artisanal breads/cheese and anything else that you may need.

Lately, some interesting Cafes have come up nearby the estate and in Seetla, and also at Mukteshwar, about 35-40 minutes’ drive through the reserved forest that is very scenic.

Hugely visited Neem Karoli Ashram is about an hour away. Almora is also an hour’s drive.

Fifteen minutes from Almora is Kasar Devi (one of the three places on Earth located on the Van Allen Belt – a zone with energetically-charged particles trapped in the Earth's magnetic field), Swami Vivekanand meditated here.

Or drive further ahead by another hour to visit some ancient temples in Jageshwar and Vradh Jageshwar which would probably be a half or whole-day trip depending on the time that you wish to spend there.

Guests who want to drive up – The last 500 meters that connects the main road to our village is adventurously motor-able. We have a safe parking area within the Hill Home estate. For guests planning to fly in or take the train, we can organise reliable local drivers for pickups and drops. Cabs can also be organised for local day trips.
